RFID TESTED
In recent years, the use of contactless data transmission has significantly increased and has become a daily part of our lives. Processes such as payment transactions or access controls can now be carried out contactlessly. These methods are based on Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The system consists of a passive transponder and an active reader. The reader generates alternating magnetic fields, which not only facilitate data communication but also provide the necessary energy to activate the transponder.
Commercially used systems today operate at frequencies of 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz and are available to everyone due to the general allocation of the frequency ranges used. Corresponding reader devices are available in a variety of types. Replicating such devices is also relatively simple using a wide range of accessible blueprints and components.
Unfortunately, these widely used systems also enable unauthorized reading and use of data. Data protection can be achieved by shielding the transponders when they are not in use (for example, to prevent unauthorized reading of a credit card stored in a wallet).
To demonstrate the required shielding effectiveness of such products, Spezial-EMV GmbH has developed an appropriate procedure. This method allows for the neutral, independent, and repeatable determination of shielding effectiveness based on recognized physical methods.
The “RFID TESTED” logo of Spezial-EMV GmbH
As a manufacturer of shielding solutions, you have the opportunity to have your products independently tested by us. Upon successful completion of the requirements, you can use our logo to promote them. In addition to the logo, you will receive a certificate confirming the successful test and the products tested. The certificate and logo can be issued for the test frequencies of 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz and are valid for 2 years. An extension is possible at any time after passing an interim assessment.
To obtain the certificate, the following requirements must be met:
- Minimum shielding effectiveness of the material at 125 kHz: 20 dB (Logo usage for 125 kHz)
- Minimum shielding effectiveness of the material at 13.56 MHz: 40 dB (Logo usage for 13.56 MHz)
- No unauthorized reading of transponders in the final manufactured products at the test frequencies of 125 kHz and 13.56 MHz (RFID live test)
The testing requires both the final manufactured product and a material sample of the shielding material sized 40×40 cm. Logo usage is contingent upon passing the RFID live test; it cannot be obtained solely based on this test. The logo can be acquired for either or both test frequencies. Adhering to the above requirements ensures sufficient shielding of the products, preventing reading by commercially available readers in close proximity.
Transparency is important to us
We publish on our website a current list of all products tested by Spezial-EMV GmbH and legally entitled to display our logo. This allows you and your customers to verify the validity of the testing and logo usage at any time.
Spezial-EMV GmbH does not guarantee that all products manufactured in series meet the requirements, as it involves a representative single test on the product provided by the manufacturer. Furthermore, it is not possible to test all possible combinations of readers. The conducted test (RFID Live Test) includes a practical use case on the respective frequencies. Our terms and conditions apply.
